What should have been our third tournament was actually our second tournament. Thanks to El Nino we got rained out twice at Los Serranos. It just wasn’t meant to be.
Encino was the sight of our 2010 Club Champ Qualifying Tournament. In the words of the Fifth Dimension….”when the moon is in the Seventh House and Jupiter aligns with Mars”….all of those things must have been happening because this is the first year that Rich Risberg did not qualify for the Club Champ Tournament, this is the first time that my brother Paul beat me scratch!!, this is the first time that Al C. beat both his sons Paul and Darryl, and can I have a drum roll please, this is the first time somebody won the stick money.
So if you weren't at the last tournament you didn’t get a chance to hear about the shot that Paul Jow hit on the 175 yard third hole that stopped within the length of the stick. Unlike Bill K., no hand job was required to make the stick longer!! Some say the ball almost went in the hole. So many of us got free drinks to celebrate this accomplishment. Paulie will be collecting again for the “Stick Pot”. Nice going Paulie….Old Guys Rule!! All you old guys that say you don’t have a chance you better take a lesson out of Paulie’s play book.
The bracket for the Club Championship is on the website.
So I got to see how real golf was played. I played in a threesome with Bobby O. and Bill K. Bobby O. shot a really impressive round of golf. He hit some great shots to some of the toughest Par 3’s we see all year. If his putter got hot he would have easily shot in the 60’s …. Gross!!! He had to settle for a 75 which ended up being a net 66 and good enough to take first place. Bill K. was not Maui Mango and played some pretty darn good golf himself. Bill K shot a 77 which equated to a net 68 which was good enough for 4th place...just enough to keep him away from the dreaded handicap penalty. I’m sure it was my presence that brought out the best in both of their games!!
Corey H. and Al C. tied for second and shot net 67’s. Bobby had both Corey and Al as partners and Corey and Al had Bobby O. as a partner so everything worked according to plan.
Hey and what was up with Larry Scott? We saw him in the bar after our round. He said he forgot about our tournament and was playing in another tournament at the same course. Awkward moment!!
It’s almost as bad as Tiger letting Elin answer his cell phone!!
Okay I had to sneak in one Tiger joke in this newsletter.
