Handicap Policy

Posted On: 3/7/2010 - by Administration

In 2007 the Handicap Committee installed a handicap reduction process:

1) A Member who comes in first or second in one of our monthly AGC Tournaments has to play at their Lowest Index (LI), as reported by the SCGA, for the next three AGC Monthly Tournaments they play in.

In June of 2009 the Handicap Committee readdressed the issue of handicap adjustments resulting in a second adjustment condition.

2) If a Member has placed first or second twice within the last 12 months he must play his next three AGC Monthly Tournaments with an index reduction of 15% to his LI, as reported by the SCGA.

These two rules were not put into place because people think sandbaggers are winning, please, we are way above that. However, it is clear that unless you shot the lowest gross score you won because a mathematical formula calculated your handicap. If you win 2 times in a year that means that you have a winning percentage of 16.6%. That puts you in high company: Tiger 29.7%, Jack 12.4%, and Arnie 8.4%.

These rules are not in place to punish winners on the contrary they were instituted to adjust a handicap formula that enhances the opportunity for the rest of the field. We got no beef with you only the math. If you still don’t get it, the University of Risberg will be offering a 6 week course on how not to manipulate the handicap system for financial gain. There’s no doubt that everyone enjoys taking home a little cash but it shouldn’t be because of an inflated handicap.
